Manchester United have joined the race to sign Lille defender Gabriel.

Everton looked red-hot favourites to get the Brazilian centre half and were close to doing a £20m deal and the 22-year-old even visited their training ground before lockdown.

But they now face serious competition as United have also made contact along with Arsenal, Napoli and Paris Saint Germain because the centre half could be available for a bargain price.

Everton appear to be cooling and concentrating on other priorities while United are keen to bring in another centre half to bolster their squad this summer.

United are ready to sell Chris Smalling with Roma keen to sign him permanently after a season-long loan, although the Serie A club are only offering £12m.
